Building HER
From movie to reality. How hard can it be?
Do you remember this movie?
It’s about a guy who falls in love with an AI. At first, it feels weird. But by the end of the movie, you get it. She’s clever. She’s funny. She has the voice of Scarlet Johansson. I mean come on.
I’ve been looking for an interesting project this summer and this is it: I want to build her. I want to build an actual AI. Not just some statistical model that can tell a cat from a dog. I’m talking about something that has a mind. Something that sees the world the way we do.
Delusional? Maybe. Worth doing? Hell yes. There’s no better way to learn more about the mind than trying to recreate it. In terms of summer projects, this is the most exciting thing I can think of.
What are my qualifications? Little to none. I know how to code but I have zero experience with machine learning. Let’s be optimistic and say that’s a good thing. A beginner’s mind is a curious mind. Who knows, I might find something the experts have missed.
I’ll write about my progress here. At the very least, it should be entertaining to watch me come in contact with reality, the same way this fine gentleman did:
